March 19, 2013, Tuesday, at the inauguration of  Pope  Francis in Rome, there  participated Metropolitan Tikhon, head of the Orthodox Church of America. He also prayed at the Solemn Mass in honor of the new Pope, and was present at the dinner, accompanied by Archpriest Eric Tosi, Secretary of the OCA.  On March 20, Metropolitan Tikhon and Fr. Eric join the delegation for an audience with Pope Francis.

This is not the first time that an OCA delegation has been taking part in a papal inauguration and in such events.  In September 1978, Metropolitan Theodosius and Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann attended the inauguration of Pope John Paul I, who died within that month.  In mid-October of the same year, [OCA] Archbishop Sylvester, Archpriest Leonid Kishkovsky were also present at the inauguration of his successor - Pope John Paul II.  In April 2005, attending his funeral were Bishop Seraphim and Priest Alexander Rentel, while Bishop Tikhon of Philadelphia and Rev. David Broome (OCA secretary at the time) were present at the inauguration of Pope Benedict XVI in the same month.
