Сегодня, в десятую годовщину кончины Первоиерарха РПЦЗ Митрополита Виталия, я хочу поделиться одним своим наблюдением.
Today,
on the tenth anniversary of the death of the First Hierarch of ROCOR,
Metropolitan Vitaly, I want to share a few of my memories of his life.
Я имел возможность регулярно общаться с владыкой на протяжении полугода, когда в 1996 году был в США.
I had the opportunity to communicate regularly with His Grace, for six months, when in 1996 I was in the United States.
Этот период общения, несомненно, дал мне больше, чем весь остальной опыт моей жизни.
This period of dialogue, of course, gave me more than my fill, about him, to last for the rest of my life experience.
Митрополит Виталий не был человеком коммуникабельным.
Metropolitan Vitaly was not a sociable man.
Он не мог подойти и общаться с другими «запросто».
He could not come up and just suddenly speak to others "easily".
Это
монашеское свойство, как следствие замкнутости на своей внутренней
жизни, накладывало отпечаток (некоторое напряжение) на его общественную
жизнь и, в итоге, возможно, определило его судьбу.
This
monastic quality of his, as a consequence of his monastic enclosure
in his inner life, left its imprint (a voltage) on his social life
and, in the end, perhaps, determined his fate.
Из-за этой некоммуникабельности его почти никогда не приглашали в гости.
Because of his non-communicativeness, he almost never invited others to visit... [social visiting].
Если
в числе архиереев РПЦЗ были настоящие народные любимцы, которые
ежедневно могли по нескольку раз в день обедать и ужинать, поскольку их
со всех сторон звали, то митрополит всегда принимал пищу у себя.
If
among the number of ROCOR bishops there were those who were many
people's favorite/pet bishops, who would often be invited to go out
for lunch and dinner several times a day, as they were called upon by
all sides often to do, the Metropolitan always took his food at home.
Он ездил за покупками продуктов с Людмилой Роснянской, а вечером с ней же совершал пешую прогулку около здания Синода.
He
went shopping with Lyudmila Rosniansky for needed products, and in the
evening he also took a walk around the building of the Synod.
Это были все его передвижения вне Синодального здания в течение суток.
Such were mostly all of his daily movements, which were inside of or outside, the Synodal building during the day.
Его
почти никогда не приглашали служить на другие приходы – в воскресения
он всегда служил в Синоде, а не на приходах (когда жил в Нью-Йорке), в
отличие от других архиереев.
He
was almost never invited to serve in other parishes - as for Pascha,
he was always serving in the Synod, and not in the parishes (when I
lived in New York), in contrast to the other bishops.
Его не любили очень многие люди.
He did not like very many people.
В
двух случаях, когда на Соборах «варяги из России», сначала Епископ
Валентин, а потом Архиепископ Лазарь (я присутствовал при этом)
предложили наградить Митрополита Виталия правом ношения второй панагии
(как сказал владыка Лазарь – он как простой митрополит, не престижно,
мол, для РПЦЗ), то было сказано, что этого не будет, потому, что
Митрополита Виталия никто не любит.
In
two cases, such as when the Councils "Vikings of Russia", first Bishop
Valentin, and then Archbishop Lazarus (I was present at the same time)
proposed to award Metropolitan Vitaly, the right to wear the second panagia;
(in the words of Bishop Lazarus - he is a simple Metropolitan, and he
is not prestigious enough, they say for ROCOR, and it was said that
this cannot be, for him to receive a second panagia, because of Metropolitan Vitaly: ' nobody likes him'.
Кстати,
Митрополит Виталий, по старости, не понял, что ему было отказано во
второй панагии, и пришел на вечерню в субботу с двумя панагиями.
By
the way, Metropolitan Vitaly, in his old age, I realized that he had
been denied a second Panagia, and he came to the vigil on Saturday,
wearing two Panagias.
Тяжело было на это смотреть.
It was hard to watch.
Только сейчас я вполне осознал, что Митрополит Виталий был очень одинок в жизни.
Only now do I fully realize that Metropolitan Vitaly was very lonely in his life.
Как, впрочем, и долженствует настоящему монаху.
As, however, this is what is meant, to be a monk [ 'one alone'...with God, from the Greek].
Он был одинок, даже когда председательствовал на Архиерейских Соборах.
He was alone, even when he presided over the Council of Bishops.
В
духовном плане он был выше всех и авторитетнее и, наверное, поэтому, он
мог ничего не говорить на заседании, но авторитет его довлел без слов.
Spiritually,
he was far above all of us, and in his person alone, he was more
authoritative, and probably therefore, he did not need to say much of anything at the meetings, but his authority alone prevailed, without words.
Из-за этого авторитета многие его считали чуть ли не диктатором, при том, что он воистину был «кроток и смирен сердцем».
Because
of this, many regarded his authority as him almost being a
'dictator', despite the fact that he was indeed, in fact, "meek and
humble of heart."
Он не мог поступить иначе, чем поступил – его путь был прямой и не предполагал колебаний и неуверенности.
He could not do otherwise than what he did- it was his way forward and he did not expect fluctuations and uncertainty.
Он и умер в одиночестве.
He died alone.
Таков, возможно, единственно верный путь настоящего воина Христова.
This is, perhaps, the only true way for a Warrior of Christ.
Как путь Самого Христа.
As the way of Christ.
В 90-х годах для огромной части православной России он был символом и олицетворением истинного православия.
For 90 years, for a huge part of the Russian Orthodox people he was a symbol and a personification of true Orthodoxy.
Таким он остался для меня до сегодняшнего дня.
So he has left this memory of himself, to me to this day.
Вечная тебе память, дорогой владыка!
